Section 3: The Task — Step-by-Step Instructions

What does "research paper" mean here? For this short assignment, a "research paper" means a focused, organized, written explanation drawing on the module's assigned readings and content. You are not expected to search external academic databases or cite journal articles. Instead, you will use the module content as your primary source and present your findings in clearly written paragraphs — not bullet points.

Write a short research paper that addresses each of the following four sections. Each section is described in detail below.

Part 1 — Define a Database and Explain Its Purpose

Write one to two paragraphs that: (a) provide a precise definition of a database — that is, state clearly what a database is in your own words, and (b) explain the primary purpose of a database — that is, describe what problem a database solves or what need it fulfills. Do not simply copy a definition word-for-word from the module. Paraphrase and demonstrate your understanding.

Part 2 — Core Vocabulary: Records, Fields, and Tables

Write one paragraph defining each of the following three terms as they are used in relational database systems. For each term, provide a brief, original example (a short phrase or sentence is sufficient) that illustrates the concept in a realistic setting — for instance, a library system, a hospital, or an online store.

Tip — "define" means: State what the term means precisely enough that someone who has never heard it before would understand it. Include what the term refers to, what it does or contains, and how it relates to the other two terms you are defining alongside it.

Part 3 — Data vs. Information

Write one paragraph that explains the difference between raw data and meaningful information. Provide one original example (different from the module's "92" example) that illustrates how a piece of raw data becomes meaningful information when placed in context. Clearly identify what the raw data is and what contextual information transforms it into something useful.

Part 4 — The Role of a DBMS and Databases vs. Spreadsheets

Write one to two paragraphs that: (a) define a Database Management System (DBMS) — explain what it is, what role it plays, and name at least two real-world examples of DBMS software, and (b) identify at least two specific ways in which a database differs from a spreadsheet, explaining why those differences matter for managing large or complex data.

Section 4: Scaffolding — Suggested Work Phases

Because this assignment is designed to be completed in under one hour, the phases below are short. Use them to stay on track.

Phase 1 — Review (approximately 10 minutes) Re-read the module content for this topic, paying close attention to the definitions of each key term. Jot down one or two phrases in your own words for each concept before you begin writing.
Phase 2 — Draft (approximately 25–30 minutes) Write your four sections in order. Aim for complete sentences and clear paragraph structure. Do not worry about perfecting language at this stage — focus on accuracy and completeness.
